Former UK Leaders Rally Behind Labour Candidate Rushanara Ali
Ansar Ahmed Ullah
In a significant show of support, former Prime Minister Gordon Brown and Shadow Minister Ed Miliband have pledged their backing for Labour candidate Rushanara Ali in the upcoming July 4th election. Ali, who is seeking re-election in Bethnal Green and Stepney, highlighted the achievements of the last Labour government and outlined her party’s vision for the future.
Ali emphasised Labour’s past successes, including rebuilding the Royal London Hospital, increasing investment in local schools, introducing the National Minimum Wage, and establishing the world’s first Climate Change Act. Rushanara Ali described the election as a “once-in-a-generation opportunity” to bring about change after 14 years of Conservative leadership.
Gordon Brown, who has worked with Ali for many years, praised her as a “tremendous spokesperson” for both the Labour Party and her community. He expressed confidence in her ability to serve effectively as a Member of Parliament if re-elected.
The campaign also focused on climate change, a key issue for Ali. She emphasised her efforts to address the climate crisis both in the UK and abroad, particularly in vulnerable countries like Bangladesh. Ed Miliband, Shadow Secretary of State for Energy Security, reinforced Labour’s commitment to making Britain a “clean energy superpower” and highlighted Ali’s passion and advocacy on environmental issues.
Ali’s track record of raising awareness about climate change’s impact on Bangladesh in Parliament was noted, along with former Prime Minister David Cameron’s acknowledgment of her efforts in this area.
The Labour Party’s manifesto promises include building 1.5 million new homes, reducing NHS waiting lists, recruiting more teachers, providing free breakfast clubs in primary schools, and implementing a “New Deal for Working People.” Ali urged voters to support Labour on July 4th to bring about the change she believes the country needs.
This endorsement from senior Labour figures underscores the party’s united front as they approach the upcoming election, with climate change and social reforms at the forefront of their campaign.
